Day 4 - Kill Bill: Volume 1

Our original plan was to watch the second Godfather movie next, but then we had an unexpected evening off, but by the time we decided to do a movie night, it was pretty late, so we went with something a little shorter.

Kill Bill was.... weird. And bloody. But mostly just weird. It was definitely a movie I never planned on watching because I knew it was going to be bloody and I'm not really a big fan of gore. As I had expected, there was quite a bit of it in there. Some of the fight scenes were pretty cool, but there was too much bloodshed for my liking.

The plot was pretty good. A woman who used to be a member of an elite group of assassins has everything taken from her and so she decides to get her revenge by killing everyone who killed the people she loved. While she's driven by anger and vengeance, she doesn't seem to have a lot of emotions other than those, and even those are barely evident. It kind of makes it hard to really feel for her, which kind of reduces it to a bloodbath.

Anyway, here is the link on Amazon:

Random thought after watching this movie: I could never be an assassin for so many reasons. And I could never even take revenge on people if they did hurt me. The thing is, I feel too much what other people feel, so when I (emotionally) hurt other people, I feel their pain as though it was mine. For that reason, I really can't have revenge when I am hurt because hurting the other person would only bring more pain. On that note, revenge really does no good. It only destroys another person and instead of one hurting person, you have two. And since hurting people hurt people, it just perpetuates the cycle of pain that's already in the world. It's better to forgive, because then you can release yourself from the pain and you cut them off from being able to have an effect on your emotions anymore.

Day 3 - The Godfather

The full extent of my knowledge of this movie was that there was a scene in which a guy wakes up to a horse head in his bed and that it was about Italian mobs. What I didn't know is that it was a 3-hour movie in which there was a massive amount of dialogue with a few gunshots dispersed throughout.

Needless to say, I was not overly impressed by this movie.

I will also say that since I knew it was going to be a long movie, I did choose to paint my nails and was therefore not fully engaged for the first hour or so. But at least my nails look awesome, right? And I will also say that once I was more into it, it was a lot more interesting and I did end up thinking it was good by the end.

Here it is on Amazon:

It is also apparently a book:

Random thought after watching this movie: Being a mob boss would be pretty awesome. You basically get people to do things for you in exchange for getting other people to do things for them. And you get mad respect. And you get to pretty much do whatever you want. But at the same time, I don't know that I know enough about gambling to run an underground gambling ring, so then how will I afford to pay all my bodyguards and buy the best guns and stuff? Plus, it just seems like a lot of work to have people constantly trying to kill you while you try to solve everybody's problems by calling in favors of people whose problems you already solved... And I just don't have the time to do it. Plus there's the whole illegal activity thing... Guess I better just stick with blogging. But, if someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse......

Day 1 - Shutter Island

Well, Day 1 also ushered in Movie 1 of the challenge with Shutter Island.

It was one of those movies that I thought I didn't want to see because I was under the impression that it was a horror movie, and I'm not generally a big fan of horror flicks.... When you've met demons in real life, movie demons are even more terrifying because you know it's not all fiction. Anyway, I thought Shutter Island was one of those movies.

Although it had a couple moments near the beginning where I thought it was looking like it might be one of those, it was still super interesting and definitely pulled both D and I in.... Even though she fell asleep at some point and I had to fill her in.... She does that a lot.

The movie was filled with fun plot twists and there was always another piece of the puzzle to try to solve. We made tons of predictions throughout the film, some of which were correct and others that proved to be untrue. In case you haven't seen it and are planning on watching it, I won't give anything away, but D guessed correctly the main plot point, and I correctly figured out who was Dr. Shehan.

Because I now know how it all works out and how everyone is connected, I kind of want to watch it again.... But maybe after the challenge, because I can't afford to waste time rewatching things!

Random thought after watching this movie: Sometimes I kind of wish I was insane. It seems like it would be nice to live in a different reality and not have any responsibilities. Also, sometimes I think I am a little insane (maybe more than a little) and maybe that's what makes the sane world feel so heavy at times. I haven't had anything truly traumatic happen to me, but I totally understand why people who have experienced terrible tragedies do snap. Insanity is a welcome escape from pain.

You can find the movie on Amazon. Also, it's apparently a book, too! (Which I now want to read....)

The Challenge

It started with a Facebook post, as these things usually do.... I guess.

B posted a quiz he had taken saying that he had seen 90 of the 250 top-rated movies of all times. D took the quiz and found that she had seen 50 of them. I have seen 41, and BD 55. After some discussion, it was decided that we would try to see all 250 movies within the next 365 days.

So we have until April 23, 2016 to watch all 250 movies on the list. Not collectively, individually. But rather than make it a competition, it's a challenge that we'll work together on.

This blog is to track my adventures through trying to watch so many movies in such a short period of time. I'm not really a movie person (as evidenced by the fact that I have seen the fewest number of movies on this list) so it will definitely be a challenge for me to be pursuing movie-watching. I'm generally more of a Facebook or YouTube browser.

I also imagine that some of these movies could be difficult to find, which could be an adventure all in itself. Being in a foreign country for now, D and I are really only able to watch what we can get to via Netflix, which really limits what we can watch, but so far there have been quite a few movies on the list that are also on Netflix, so I think we'll be ok until we're both Stateside again.

D and I are starting tonight with Shutter Island, with plans to watch the Godfather tomorrow.
